Born in Naples, Domenico Scarlatti followed in the footsteps of his father, Alessandro, and wrote works in a wide variety of genres. Among his most beloved works are his Sonatas for keyboard, a collection of 555 pieces. It is thought that they were originally composed as harpsichord exercises for Queen Maria Barbara of Spain, and neither the order of composition nor the date of composition is known for certain. Each does not have the form of a modern sonata, but is characterized by bold modulations and harmonic richness in short pieces, mostly in a single movement or two-part form. As mentioned above, they were written for harpsichord, but when played on a modern piano, including the technical difficulties (the keyboard is heavier than in those days), they offer a different and more interesting experience. The 17 sonatas being performed this time are by Seo-yeon Kate Ri, a native of Korea. The beauty of the tones is their specialty. Naxos Japan
