Description:
Goffredo Petrassi was an Italian composer, educator, and conductor who was a choirboy at the Salvatore Church in Rome, studied at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, taught, and from 1937 to 1940 was director of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and He presided over festivals of contemporary music. He composed a total of eight concertos for orchestra. The fourth piece is played by strings only. It was premiered on April 28, 1956 by the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Fernando Previtali. No. 5, commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra for its 75th anniversary, is a tribute to conductor Sergei Koussevitzky, who died in 1951. No. 6 was commissioned to commemorate the launch of the BBC's "Third Program," and as the subtitle "Concerto Ingenuity" suggests, there are many opportunities for the solo part to play an active role throughout.
