Francesco La Vecchia Petrassi (1904-2003)

Description:

Goffredo Petrassi was an Italian composer, educator, and conductor. After serving in the choir of the Salvatore Church in Rome, he studied at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia and later became a teacher; from 1937 to 1940, he was director of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, where he presided over a festival of contemporary music. The "Concerto for Orchestra No. 1" was begun in 1933 and completed the following year; it was premiered in 1935 under the baton of Bernardino Molinari. The first movement opens with a sharply shaped theme, led by the brass and piano. In the adagio, the clarinet and oboe take over the string melody, the trumpet and piano add depth, and the piece closes with a striking saxophone melody. The final movement closes with the magnificent sound of the brass instruments. The four movements are played in succession. The first movement begins with polyphony in the strings, followed by a dynamic development of the woodwinds. In the Allegretto, the dialogue between the woodwinds and strings suddenly develops into an explosive sound before moving into a slow movement. In the final movement, the fast tempo is followed by a solo instrumental dialogue. The "No. 3" was composed between 1952 and 1953, and premiered in 1953.The first movement begins with an introduction of percussion and brass instruments and develops with a sense of tension. After an interlude-like second movement, the final movement begins lightly and ends surprisingly easily with a cymbal strike. Naxos Japan
