The composer Meyerbeer (1791–1864) is known for numerous operas, including *Robert the Devil* and *The Prophet*. Featuring a wide variety of styles, his *Song Collection, Vol. 2*—which includes world-first recordings—is an important album that explores the creative wellsprings of Meyerbeer from his late 30s to his mid-60s. The selected poems are equally diverse, ranging from works by anonymous poets to those by lawyers, journalists, and even the British author Walter Scott. The musical styles vary widely, ranging from romantic longings for love, joy, and pain to, at times, religious themes. The piece “The Shepherd’s Song,” accompanied by clarinet, possesses a splendor reminiscent of an opera aria, while “Near You” features a dialogue between the resonant cello and the voice.
