Description:
Russian composer/music teacher Shteinberg (1843-1946) was a favorite pupil of Rimsky=Korsakov and inherited his style when he married his teacher's daughter Nadezhda in 1908. Because of his conservative line, he was rarely subjected to Zhidanov's criticism, and he contributed to the development of music in the modern Soviet Union, serving as director of the Leningrad Conservatory between 1934 and 1939. However, his moderation caused him to be forgotten, and these works are rarely heard today. The Passion Week" is another choral piece whose score has long been lost, and it is estimated to have been composed between 1920 and 1923. The unaccompanied chorus, based on Slavic chant, makes for a moving liturgical music with a strength reminiscent of Rachmaninoff's "Evening Prayer.
