Composed in 1982-84, Weinberg's (1919-1996) Symphony No. 17 is the first in a series known as the "War Trilogy." The title is taken from a poem by the Russian poetess Anna Ahmatova, and the score includes her poem, but the composer does not give a specific explanation. The quiet sadness and anger of Weinberg, who lost her parents and siblings in the war, pervades every movement of this powerful work, which needs no explanation. The "Suite" was written around 1950, just as Stalin's rule was coming to an end, and Weinberg was making a living with film music and circus music at the time.Although published in 1951, there is no record of an official performance, and this recording is probably a world first. The light melody, reminiscent of Shostakovich's "Jazz Suite," expresses the complicated times as they were. Naxos Japan
