Sousa Carvalho (1745-1798) was a Portuguese-born composer who is said to have trained many students as a professor. This opera was written from a libretto by Pietro Metastasio based on "Orlando mad and Orlando in love," which were popular at the time. The story is about the heroism of Orlando, which is so spectacularly portrayed that aristocrats and royalty can liken themselves to the protagonists. The work was performed and soon forgotten, but more than 200 years later, it is finally being revived by conductor Pedro Castro. 2014 recording. (C)RS
