In 1909, at the request of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Ravel composed "Daphnis et Chloe," a classical Greco-Roman love story set on the island of Lesbos. Ravel called it a "gigantic musical fresco" and created a lush work with passionate music and colorful orchestration. The idea for this work came from Fokin, the ballet's choreographer, but Fokin and Diaghilev fell out over various issues at the time of the performance, and the work itself was hidden behind a scandal caused by Nijinsky's erotic behavior in "Pastoral Afternoon," which was also performed at the same time. The work itself disappeared from the stage for a time, hidden by the scandal caused by Nijinsky's erotic gestures in "The Pastor's Afternoon," which was performed at the same time. However, the music is still very much worth listening to even without the ballet, and today it is much more popular as a concert program than as a ballet.The "Little Boat on the Sea" recorded in the margins is Ravel's own arrangement from piano music, depicting the ever-changing mood of the sea.
