Description:
Froberger (1616-1667), active in the early Baroque period, is known as a composer of important keyboard works that preceded Bach. An excellent keyboard player, Froberger's works were also mostly for keyboard, and he created a number of "suites" that combine the rigorous polyphony he learned from Frescobaldi with French lute music forms. The form of the suite, which incorporates an armand, courant, sarabande, and gigue, has had a profound influence on later composers. Nevertheless, there is still much room for further research in Froberger's works. Harpsichordist Glenn Wilson has conducted extensive research and selected 23 suites for this performance.
