Underlying all of these works is a sense of grief over the carnage of World War I. Each of the four composers—like Butterworth—either lost their lives in that war or went on to live out the rest of their lives while bearing the heavy burden of that loss. “The Young Man from Shropshire” is a beautiful work—conceived as the epilogue to his song cycle of the same name—that seems to capture the very essence of life’s fleeting beauty. Its nostalgic melody, which draws on the tune from “The Fairest Tree” in the song cycle, is impossible to hear without being moved to tears. Finzi lost his beloved teacher, Ernest Farrar, in that war. Although he would go on to lead a life full of ups and downs, there is no doubt that losing not only his mentor but also his beloved family at that time had a profound impact on his outlook on life. This chamber requiem is filled with an almost eerie stillness. Although the work remained unfinished, P. Thomas’s expanded version was once performed and highly acclaimed. Here, we hear a performance based on the new edition by Christian Alexander. Gurné lost his health due to poison gas inhaled on the battlefield and spent the rest of his life in a hospital. This “Trumpet” is a work that denounces human folly. Vaughan Williams’s “Elegy,” written in memory of a lost friend, reflects the artistic maturity he reached in his later years—a departure from the kind of music he typically composed.
