Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788) was born as the second son of the great J.S. Bach. He is known for having inherited the style of his father’s friend Telemann rather than that of his father, and for laying the foundations of the Classical period through his exploration of the more simple, melody-driven Gallant style. Although C.P.E. Bach was not particularly skilled at playing the organ, but the series of works he composed for the instrument—particularly the sonata collection Wq. 70, composed in 1755 for Anna Amalia, the sister of Frederick II—is a masterpiece so superb that it is said to have been highly praised by both Anna and Frederick II. Listeners can enjoy a flowing sound supported by richly ornamented melodies. Recorded in 2014 by Ian Quinn (organ). (C)RS
