Berlin Gamba Book (2 CDs) This is a “Collection for Solo Viola da Gamba,” compiled in the 17th century by an unknown composer. It primarily draws on hymns that were in circulation at the time (sources that have been identified are noted in the booklet), and at times, you may recognize familiar melodies. It is believed that most of these pieces were transcribed from hymns by an amateur musician residing in Prussia whose initials were “J.R.”, and the resulting “chorale variations” offer a different experience from those heard on the organ. Viola da gamba player Dietmar Berger is an artist whose keen insight and expressive playing have been highly praised in *The Manchester Gamba Book* (8572863).
