Description:
Although the composer Fibich (1850–1900) was one of the pioneers of the Czech National School, he has never really gained recognition in Japan; it seems that only a very small selection of his works—such as his piano pieces—are quietly cherished there. Is it perhaps because his overly heroic atmosphere is too reminiscent of the “German Romantic” style? However, recently, several labels—including NAXOS—have released his symphonies and orchestral works, and it seems his fan base is gradually growing. This fourth volume of his orchestral collection features expressive works such as “Overtures” and “Ballet Pieces.” “A Night at Karlštejn,” with its thrilling, heroic roar of the horns, and a piece composed in honor of the Czech educator Comenius. The opera “Hedi” depicts the character Don Juan and features ballet music reminiscent of Tchaikovsky. The “Hippodamia Trilogy,” based on Greek mythology, is notable for its beautiful harp melodies woven into a heroic atmosphere. The remaining four works are all music for “living pictures” (a form of performance based on medieval liturgical dramas, in which actors and artists remain frozen in specific poses, creating a “living painting”). Stilez has carefully reconstructed the music originally composed for this art form, which was popular for a time. Naxos Japan
