Messiaen's (1908-1992) song cycles written between 1936 and 1938 (with the exception of Halawi), despite being early in his career as a composer, are remarkable for what they represent, and clearly show his characteristic "relationship between sound and color" and sensuality. Poems for Mi" is a collection of songs dedicated to "Mi," the nickname of his wife Claire Delbos (who died in 1959), and sings about the joys of conjugal love and the sacrament of marriage. The colorful sounds that change with each note are a direct reflection of the light from the stained glass windows that Messiaen loved. Vocalise etude" is a small piece with no lyrics. It was written as a vocal exercise for the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, and one can only marvel at the sound pictures that are typical of Messiaen (even in the style of Debussy) in such a short piece.In "Songs of Heaven and Earth," he not only sings of his love for his wife, but also of his love for his children, and even of "death and resurrection" in high spirits. I was amazed at how much more mysterious it became only two years after "Poem for Mi. Beautifully performed by the Brune-Hildig Duo. Naxos Japan
