An endless piano unison is played, into which a violin cuts sharply with dissonant notes. This Piano Quintet captivates the listener from the very first, thrilling opening section alone. Its composer, Boris Tchaikovsky (1925–1996), is highly regarded as the most original composer of “the generation following Shostakovich.” Composed in 1962, the “Piano Quintet” is a well-structured work featuring a rhythmic and melodic second movement following the aforementioned first movement, a third movement in variation form, and an expressive final movement; it is also considered his masterpiece. The “War Suite” was composed as the score for the 1964 film *Defending the Front Line*, directed by Yuri Feit, but the score went missing after the film’s release. However, the Boris Tchaikovsky Society searched for the manuscript, discovered it in St. Petersburg, and subsequently edited it, resulting in the version we have today. The story centers on the young officer Rusanov, who is heading off to battle, and his fiancée Katya, who waits for him. After returning from a dangerous mission with his friends, Rusanov watches as Katya is struck by a stray bullet and dies right before his eyes… In the final scene, Rusanov stands outside his home, overcome with grief. This story unfolds accompanied by a sorrowful waltz. Naxos Japan
