Born in Kiev, Russia, Gurriere (1875-1956) studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory with Taneyev and Arensky. In fact, however, his father was German and his mother Polish. It seems that there was no Russian in his ancestry. Glière is known for his ballet music "Poppy Flowers" and several concertos, but this Symphony No. 3 is a brilliant work that is praised as his masterpiece. Ilya Mouromets is the name of a legendary medieval Russian hero. He is said to have been an exceptionally powerful man, and many episodes are told about him. Glière has selected four episodes related to this hero and created a profound symphony. The expressive and majestic work, which combines the techniques of Russian nationalism and late Romanticism, overflows with enough expressive power to bring a vivid image of Mouroumets to the mind of each listener, even if he or she is not familiar with his personality.Falletta's conducting brings Glière's consummate constructiveness to full relief.
