Description:
Johann Joachim Quantz (1697–1773) was one of the greatest and most innovative flutists and composers of the 18th century. He also served as the teacher of Frederick II, the Great King of Prussia, who was an amateur flutist, and court concerts served as the primary venues for performances of Quantz’s flute concertos. The king treated Quantz with great generosity, even paying him a special gratuity every time he composed a piece for the flute. In response, Quantz composed numerous magnificent works. In 1752, he also authored *A Treatise on the Art of Playing the Flute*, a masterpiece that is still read today and serves as an excellent resource for understanding the style of that era. Among the works included here, the piece in A minor was previously believed to be lost, but it was recently acquired from the Russian State Library in St. Petersburg; together with the cadenza in G major, it constitutes a valuable historical document. The concerto in C minor was left unfinished at Quant’s death and was later completed by the king, who added the missing sections to produce the final version. Naxos Japan
