Montsalvatge (1912–2002) was active in the early 20th century. He was one of Spain’s leading composers and made a significant contribution to the development of Catalan culture. He was active not only as a composer but also as a teacher at the Barcelona Conservatory, where he instructed numerous students, and after the Spanish Civil War, he began writing music reviews for newspapers. He also left behind outstanding works in the field of film music. By listening to both his early and mature works on this album, we can gain insight into the sounds he sought to create. Having been interested in dance since his student days, he composed his first music for a ballet at the age of 22 and went on to create several new works thereafter. This “Manfred” was inspired by Byron’s poem and clearly shows the influence of Stravinsky. “Brick-a-Black” is his final orchestral work, a piece brimming with rhythm and intense resonance. Among his numerous religious compositions, the profound spirituality that permeates the particularly magnificent “Sinfonia de Requiem” is also worth noting. Naxos Japan
