As an opera composer in the early 19th century, he enjoyed unparalleled popularity. His music combined the best elements of the “Italian opera” style exemplified by Rossini with the “German opera” style epitomized by Mozart; this lavish and spectacular form became the foundation of “grand opera” and is known to have exerted a strong influence on French opera and Wagner. "Robert le Diable," which premiered in 1831, sent shockwaves through the Paris opera world, and the ballet in Act III became a major talking point. A monastery on a moonlit night. The sight of the sinful nuns buried in this crypt dancing as ghosts is truly mystical, and this scene is also known to have been captured on canvas by the great painter Degas. Chopin, too, was deeply moved by this opera and composed a piece for cello and piano using themes from the score. Such is Meyerbeer’s ballet music—it simply cannot fail to be fascinating. Naxos Japan
