Written in the style of letters by Anne Frank—a sensitive teenage girl caught up in the turmoil of war—while in hiding in an Amsterdam secret annex, this diary contains sharp insights and a critical spirit, yet is expressed in a youthful, girlish style that conveys a strength undaunted by the hardships of wartime life. Witbone’s music has been praised as “painfully beautiful” (The Daily Telegraph) and “expressed with a delicacy and restraint that convey this great strength” (The Times).
