It is said that Paganini, deeply moved after hearing the “Symphonie fantastique” in Paris in 1833, commissioned Berlioz (1803–1869) to compose this work, “Harold in Italy.” The piece was originally inspired by scenes from George Byron’s long poem *The Pilgrimage of Child Harold*, and “Harold’s Theme,” introduced by the solo viola in the first movement, reappears in various forms throughout the entire work. Paganini had expected a flamboyant piece that would showcase the viola’s virtuosic capabilities, but Berlioz ultimately did not follow Paganini’s vision; instead, he slightly modified the original plan and completed the work as a symphonic poem featuring the viola. This performance is also particularly interesting, as it features the original orchestral part transcribed for piano accompaniment by Franz Liszt. The other piece, the “Irish Sonata,” was composed by Kurt Roger. Although he studied under Schoenberg, his compositional style is lyrical.
