Description:
The development of keyboard music was remarkable in 16th century Italy, and many important composers wrote works for the keyboard. However, most of the surviving works are for organ, and very few harpsichord works have survived. However, Wilson, a performer, carefully researched the literature and found that many of the works listed as "for organ" were actually written to be played on the harpsichord, and that many of the pieces were not actually designated for any instrument. This album focuses on works by Cavazzoni, an outstanding keyboard player and composer active in the 15th and 16th centuries. His ricercare are improvisatory, mostly using the technique of developing "little themes" based on popular songs of the time. These are also usually played on the organ, but in this album they are restored for the harpsichord in their original form. Naxos Japan
