Description:
Brahms’s “German Requiem” is a religious work composed in 1869. Although it is said that the idea for the piece originated upon Schumann’s death in 1857, it was actually completed following the death of Brahms’s mother in 1865. While Catholic requiems are typically sung in Latin, this work is written entirely in German, using texts selected by Brahms himself (such as the German translation of the Bible by Luther). It is interesting to note that Brahms himself intended this work for concert performance rather than for use in church, which explains why passages relating to the Resurrection of Christ were omitted from the text. While the gentle melody of the first movement is used throughout, the work as a whole is polyphonic, highly structured, and musically rich. The performance features Allsopp, who has already released a complete set of Brahms’ symphonies. The solos by Stefan Gents, known for his beautiful voice, and the up-and-coming soprano A.L. Richter (born in 1990) add a touch of brilliance to the rich, mellow tones of the Leipzig MDR Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Naxos Japan
