Description:
Mercadante (1795–1870) made a significant contribution to the development of 19th-century Italian opera. Encouraged by Rossini, he began composing operas, and following the success of his debut work, *The Deification of Hercules*, he went on to produce one masterpiece after another. In 1823, he was appointed music director of the Teatro San Carlo, and he left behind more than 60 operas in his lifetime. However, during the approximately six-year period from 1814 to 1820, Mercadante, inspired by his classmates and teachers at the conservatory, composed numerous instrumental works, primarily flute pieces. Now that most of his operas have been forgotten, it is a pity that these instrumental works are performed more often; however, the three concertos included on this album are undoubtedly wonderful, featuring a brilliant interplay between the technically dazzling soloist and the orchestra, and their flowing melodies are sure to captivate you. Galois’s solo performance is flawless, and his command of the orchestra is simply masterful. You can enjoy this recording with complete confidence. Naxos Japan
