"Shostakovich is the best!" This series by Petrenko makes you want to shout that the moment you finish listening. We’re now approaching the midway point. This release pairs Symphony No. 6—which has many fans but is perhaps a bit understated (?)—with Symphony No. 12, one of Shostakovich’s (1906–1975) masterpieces. Although Symphony No. 6, composed in 1839, has no title, it is believed to be the prototype for Symphony No. 12. The first movement, with its relentlessly dark and eerie atmosphere, is particularly striking. If you want to hear the lyrical side of Shostakovich, this movement is the one to listen to. In contrast, the second movement is light and beautiful, while the third movement features a whirlwind of sound that seems to put the orchestra’s abilities to the test—making this a work with many highlights. It is said that the composer himself remarked, “This work, which sought to embody the October Revolution and Lenin, is a tribute to Lenin.” However, it is increasingly becoming the accepted view that his true intentions lay elsewhere. If that’s the case, it’s certainly valid to wonder, “What’s the real story here?” and to search for hidden meanings, but first, let’s listen closely to the music. As always, Petrenko mercilessly trims away all unnecessary fat. What remains is nothing but the leanest, most delicious meat. There’s no time even to spare a thought for the anecdotes (allegedly) surrounding the piece.
