The reason why so many fascinating songs are rarely heard is that Martineau (1890-1959) left behind so many works during his lifetime. In fact, there are more than 400 symphonies, concertos, and chamber works in this collection. The works in this first collection are from his youth, composed between 1910 and 1912. These songs were written by a precocious prodigy who began composing at the age of 10. These songs, which are wonderfully scored with texts in Spanish, German, French, and English, as well as Czech folk poetry, unfortunately cannot shake off the influence of Brahms, Schubert, and Dvořák, but they more than make up for these minor shortcomings with a "treasure trove of melodies. But these minor shortcomings are more than made up for by the "treasure trove of melodies". Naxos Japan
