The modern English composer Edwin York Bowen, like Hindemith, was skilled enough to play almost every instrument in the orchestra, but it was the sound of the viola that he loved. This was no doubt inspired by the presence of Lioness Turtis, the "father of the modern viola," but perhaps it was also overshadowed by the emotional trauma he suffered during the war. The two sonatas he sang through his viola were considered "difficult to perform" at the time of their composition, and it is thought that they lost their chance to be introduced to the world because they did not find a suitable player. Although he was sometimes criticized as being "out of date" because of his nostalgic style during his lifetime, it is a shame that someone who writes such beautiful songs should be buried in the past.
