Description:
New Zealand composer Ross Harris (1945-) studied in Christ Church and Wellington and taught at Victoria University for over 30 years before taking early retirement in 2004 and now freelancing. He has written many operas and orchestral works. This album contains two of his symphonies. Please take your time to enjoy his "often beautiful, sometimes frightening" works. Symphony No. 2 is based on a poem by Vincent O'Sullivan about a New Zealand soldier who fell in love with a woman in the war zone and deserted during World War I. It is "tricky" music, in which you are instantly thrown into a hellish world after listening to the grand fanfare. Symphony No. 3, inspired by a painting by Marc Chagall, is poetic and fantastic music interspersed with klezmer (traditional Jewish music) style sounds.Both pieces are bare-bones, with each movement marked only with a speed indication, but the content is surprisingly rich and eloquent. Composed for the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, they were awarded New Zealand's prestigious "SOUNZ Contemporary Award. Naxos Japan
