Paganini (1782–1840), the consummate master of the violin, was in fact also a virtuoso guitarist. He composed over 100 works for the guitar and made a significant contribution to the development of the instrument. This collection, *Capricci (Giribizzi)*, consists of 43 short pieces written in the fall of 1820 for Mr. Bott’s charming daughter, the “Naples Girl.” It unfolds a world of virtuosic and dazzling music based on motifs from the works of Rossini, Paisiello, Jussmayer, Mozart, Giuliani, and Paganini himself—which were flooding the market at the time—to create a world of virtuosic and dazzling music. Although the girl’s name is unknown, she was likely an accomplished performer, and one can imagine that Paganini took great pleasure in composing these pieces. The performer here, Sun-Ho Jansen, is a rising star who made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2005. In his hands, it seems there is no piece he cannot play. Naxos Japan
