Chopin (1810–1849) composed songs from time to time throughout his life, but ultimately never published them. The reason for this is unknown, but perhaps these pieces were an expression of his personal feelings? After Chopin’s death, his friend Fontana organized his manuscripts and published 16 of them as Opus 74. Later, Schresinger added one more song, bringing the total to 17. This album also features two songs that were discovered subsequently. Unlike his piano works, most of these are simple, strophic songs with a rustic quality, yet there is no doubt that they are truly profound music. This album also features four songs in which Pauline Viardot, a friend of Chopin’s and a talented female composer, set lyrics to Chopin’s mazurkas, “transforming them into songs.” The charming performances by the Pasichnik sisters vividly convey a lesser-known side of Chopin.
