Description:
This is a collection of string quartets by five Asian composers, including Japan’s own “Takemitsu.” “Song of Qin,” featuring striking pizzicato that mimics the sound of the koto, is a work by Cambodian-born Chinari Un that incorporates Buddhist philosophy into Western musical forms. Gao Ping, born in Sichuan Province, is also well-known as a pianist and has visited Japan to showcase his technique; here, however, he presents music with a mysterious resonance. As for Takemitsu, he certainly needs no introduction at this point. This work was commissioned to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Tokyo Quartet’s formation. Tan Dun’s work is a collection of pieces he wrote for the first time after arriving in New York in 1986. It is a collection of pictorial miniatures depicting a variety of scenes, ranging from childhood memories to atonal music. The performance by the New Zealand String Quartet further highlights the fusion of different cultures. Naxos Japan
