This is a collection of works by Cervantes (1847–1905), a key figure in Latin American piano music. His compositional style, which reflected the culture and national identity of his native Cuba, was a huge hit with audiences of the time and played an important role not only in concert halls but also as dance music. Although the exact dates of composition for this “Collection of Cuban Dances” are unknown, it is a fascinating collection with a distinctly essay-like quality, featuring the composer’s casual notes and musings jotted directly into the scores. Above all, every piece is pure joy. Each piece is short—just one to two minutes long—and the collection of 38 pieces is full of variety, ranging from light, lively rhythms reminiscent of Scott Joplin to gentle, Chopin-esque mazurka-style pieces.
