Petrassi (1904-2003) is an Italian composer who belongs to a slightly later generation than the recently popular Casella and Pizzetti. His early works, influenced by neoclassicism, were extremely melodic, but he later shifted to a style that used atonal and twelve-tone techniques, and he produced a great deal of his own original music that painstakingly blended these techniques. He was also active as a conductor and visited Japan in 1959. Although there are many points in common with Stravinsky, such as his long life and his use of neoclassical twelve-tone techniques, we will focus here on his works from the 1930s to the 1940s to explore the starting point of his creative process. In particular, his famous "Chorus of the Dead" is a masterpiece of mystical beauty. Naxos Japan
