It’s a shame that, despite being such a wonderful piece, there aren’t many opportunities to hear it! Composed by Mendelssohn in 1840 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press, this symphony with vocal parts is a majestic work based on a German translation of the Old Testament. Whether it’s because the overture is too long or for some other reason, this piece is strangely underappreciated, but Jun Merkur performs it with great enthusiasm, masterfully capturing its festive atmosphere.
