Description:
Granados (1867–1916), a major Spanish composer of the modern era alongside Falla and Albéniz, wrote about a dozen chamber music works during his lifetime (though this is not widely known). Here, we present the Piano Trio and Piano Quintet from among them. His compositional style could be described as “New Romantic,” and these two chamber works, which he began composing around 1984, are characterized throughout by a gentle and beautiful tone. The Piano Trio, which begins with soft arpeggios, weaves in Moorish and Hungarian melodies—styles he loved—while overall unfolding as gentle, salon-style music. The lyrical quality of the “Duet” in the third movement is even reminiscent of Schubert. The Piano Quintet is music brimming with tension; while it, too, possesses an exotic atmosphere, it remains romantic overall. The rustic charm of the second movement captures the listener’s heart. The interlude from “Goyescas,” arranged by Casado, allows you to enjoy “Spanish-style” music to your heart’s content. Naxos Japan
