Although Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) composed numerous piano pieces, this collection of “18 Pieces” is an exceptionally polished work that he completed during the very last years of his life, just six months before his death. Each piece possesses a depth of character distinct from the typical salon-style miniatures, creating a world rich in poetic imagery and originality. The fact that many of these pieces are dedicated to friends and colleagues—and that many are introspective—suggests that Tchaikovsky, who was perhaps feeling a bit weary of life, may have written them as his own final words. The pianist delivering a magnificent performance here is Konstantin Shamray, a prize winner at the 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition. His performance breathes a youthful vitality into the expression of this collection, which can otherwise tend toward pessimism. Some listeners may also be familiar with the orchestral version of No. 10, “Fantastic Scherzo.” This is the version that was incorporated into the third movement when composer Bogatilev later took up a work that Tchaikovsky had conceived as a symphony titled “Life” but abandoned midway, and completed it as a four-movement symphony.
