Description:
This is a collection of piano sonatas by Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838), a master pianist, friend of Beethoven, and biographer. He began composing piano sonatas in his own unique way, as piano music was transitioning from Clementi to Haydn to Mozart. His style continued into the Romanticism of Schubert and Mendelssohn. The C major sonata opens with a dignified polonaise, followed by an emotional second movement, a mournful third movement, and a lively final movement. The clever modulations are not found in the works of the classical school. The F-sharp minor sonata titled "Unlucky" shows the influence of Beethoven. The structure of the first movement is almost the same as the "Sonata Pathetique," and the second and third movements are also "Beethoven-like.However, Ries was unfortunate in that it was never as destructive as Beethoven's and remained only an elegant lament. The Dream, a de facto sonata in six parts in a single movement, was written to publicize his activities in London, where he visited in 1813, and was published the following year to great success.
