Description:
Markevich (1912–1983) is known as a great conductor. However, before World War II, he was recognized as a “composer of extraordinary talent.” All of his works were written in his twenties (for some reason, he stopped composing at the age of 29), and each one displays a remarkable level of artistry. His talents are perhaps best exemplified in his “Sinfonietta.” Its explosive energy and occasional mystical moments are too numerous to list. The “Cinema Overture” was composed in 1931. It is a ballet score composed for a film conceived by Leonid Maschin (which was never made). With its complex rhythms and use of unusual instruments such as sirens, this piece is hard to believe was written by a 19-year-old. [Comment provided by Naxos Japan] ---
