In 1805, at the age of 73, Haydn (1732–1809) revised his “Missa Brevis,” which he had composed in his youth, adding flute, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, and timpani to create a richer sound. He revised this early work at the request of Breitkopf & Härtel, the publisher of his works at the time, but it appears the revised version was never actually published. Another work, the “Creation Mass,” is so named because it incorporates excerpts from the oratorio *The Creation*. Premiered on September 13, 1801—the name day of Empress Maria Theresa—this late work is a masterpiece brimming with flowing melodies and power. Naxos Japan
