In April 1968 (two months after Pizzetti’s death), musicologist Waterhouse published a tribute to “Pizzetti (1880–1968), a contemporary Italian composer on par with Casella and Malipiero.” He also had a unique career, having been close to the Fascist regime in the 1940s and having composed the “Ode to the 2,600th Anniversary of the Imperial Era” (Symphony in A major). This album features four pieces—including world premiere recordings—selected from the gems of his 40-year creative career. From the “Summer Concerto,” which follows Baroque forms, to the “Symphonic Prelude”—one of his most original early works—and on to pieces from his later years, this album reveals glimpses of the greatness of Pizzetti’s music, which is by no means widely popular today.
