Description:
This album contains two days of performances from the 1999 concert commemorating the 150th anniversary of Chopin's death, which was a special event of the Schwetzingen Music Festival. Billet, whose series of Chopin recordings had been highly acclaimed, was invited to perform on May 15, but Anatole Ugolski, who was scheduled to appear on May 14, canceled on the day of the concert due to health concerns. Billet, who was asked by the organizers to fill in for Ugolski, flew from Brussels to Stuttgart Airport and arrived at the venue by helicopter and car, and performed the program without changing a single piece. The result was so satisfying that even the great critic Joachim Kaiser was generous in his praise of Billette. The program, including the encores, did not duplicate even a single piece from the previous day, much to the amazement of the audience and critics.
