Layton: Complete Chamber Music for Cello One of NAXOS’s defining characteristics is its unrivaled commitment to releasing works of modern and contemporary British music. This collection of works by Kenneth Layton is a prime example. Setting aside the composer’s name recognition, both NAXOS and another British label, “Chandos,” have joined forces to record his works. Layton wrote his first piece for solo cello at the age of 20, while a student at Queen’s College, Oxford. Unfortunately, this three-movement work in E-flat minor does not survive in its complete form today, but its atmosphere lives on in Op. 5, the “Elegy.” This piece strongly reflects the influence of his predecessors, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Finzi, and Howells. The “Partita,” written about ten years later, is a distinctive work in which dynamic and introspective passages intertwine. The 1959 Unaccompanied Cello Sonata is clearly an homage to J.S. Bach, yet the piece itself conveys not a trace of Bach’s style; instead, it unfolds into a desolate world. The mystical atmosphere of “Alleluia,” written for his second wife, is also striking.
