Joseph Joachim (1831-1907), a musician who "went his own way," studied violin with Mendelssohn, was concertmaster in Weimar, first befriended Liszt and Wagner, then turned around and criticized Liszt and Wagner after learning of Schumann and Brahms. 1907). His violin concerto, written in 1851 and dedicated to Liszt, is strongly influenced by Mendelssohn, and the weeping melody is irresistible in places. The Op. 11 concerto, written in 1857, features a long first movement and a finale with a very technical and folkloric flavor. Kim, the winner of the 2006 Hanover International Competition, plays this difficult work with ease. This is a piece to sigh for. ［Comment courtesy of Naxos Japan
