After listening to Nos. 1 through 8, I’m sure many of you have become captivated by these works. Compared to Classical-era works bound by strict form, Romantic works that tend to be deeply emotional, or even contemporary works that demand a certain sensitivity from the listener, it’s clear just how much performers are enjoying themselves when playing pieces from Leclerc’s (1697–1764) era. Ornamentation and accompaniment are fine as long as they don’t stray from the main theme. However, one could also say that this actually puts the performers’ artistic sensibilities to the test. These Sonatas Nos. 9 through 12 also feature highly versatile musical ideas, with the slow and fast movements presenting a striking contrast—and the effect is truly breathtaking.
