This is a collection of piano works by Fanny Mendelssohn (1805–1847), whose name was long relegated to footnotes in music history, where she was mentioned only in passing alongside her brother’s fame. Many of you may have already caught a glimpse of her talent in the previously released song collection (8.570981). Although she composed some 500 works during her 42-year life and had a profound influence on her brother Felix, her compositions have long been overlooked simply because she was a woman. First and foremost, set aside all preconceptions and listen to this eloquent music. Although she reportedly wished for her works to be “treated as the pastime of a housewife,” deep within those words, one can discern the figure of a genius brimming with talent she could scarcely contain. Her pieces in the minor keys, in particular, are brimming with heartbreak and passion, evoking a thrill almost as intense as listening to Beethoven’s works. Naxos Japan
