Tan Dun (-1957) is one of the leading contemporary Chinese composers. His activities are international, and he is also widely active as a conductor. His works range from stage productions to film music, and he is known for his fusion of Western and Eastern music, including the use of traditional Chinese instruments in many of his works. He is also known for his voracious interest in unusual instruments and techniques, and even incorporates the sounds of water and paper into his music. This album contains three works, including an exceptional new piece written in 2012. The "Concerto for Orchestra," written for his close friend, the singer Placido Domingo, and the "Orchestral Theater," the piece that made his name.
