This opera, *Romulus*, is based on a play by Alexandre Dumas (the Elder). Produced as a joint venture between the Guggenheim Museum and the American Opera Project, it premiered in 2007, and this recording features the exact same cast. The story humorously depicts a minor conspiracy unfolding in Tyrol, Austria. While the music is perhaps a bit too modern to be classified as “opéra comique,” the exaggerated characterizations, memorable music, and a cast of first-rate singers set it apart from other contemporary operas.
