Description:
In 1861, the “Civil War”—the largest civil war in the history of the United States since its independence—broke out. Composer Gordon (1956–) adapted this conflict, sparked by economic, social, and political differences, into a 90-minute opera. Of course, this was no easy task. Campbell, who wrote the libretto, sought the assistance of Ed Ayres, a scholar well-versed in the Civil War, and thoroughly researched various materials—including photographs, diaries, old sheet music, and letters from that era—before finally completing the work after much effort. Needless to say, for the production, the entire cast and crew—including singers who took on multiple roles—worked together to create a deeply moving performance. The song cycle “Late Afternoon” was written in memory of Gordon’s partner, Jeffrey Grossi. A sense of sweetness lingers amidst the profound grief. Naxos Japan
