The "problematic opera" is finally coming to NAXOS. This performance was recorded live in 2008, and was fully prepared with singers who specialize in this opera. The conductor is Marin Allsopp, one of the most promising female conductors in the United States today. The script by Alice Goodman is based on well-researched historical facts, and all the people surrounding Mao Zedong and Nixon are depicted with their real names. Jiang Qing performs a transcendent aria at a politically charged party, and the piece's profound minimalist music shows how Nixon paves the way for reconciliation with China, with which he has long been at loggerheads.
