Richard Strauss’s opera *Intermezzo* is an autobiographical work in which Strauss, having established himself as a master composer, projected his own family life. The main characters, the conductor Storch and his wife Christine, are modeled after the Strauss couple. The opera humorously and emotionally depicts a marital crisis arising from a trivial misunderstanding, and can be described as an operatic version of the symphonic poem *Family Symphony*. Musically, the work centers on the “recitative with accompaniment” style explored since *Ariadne auf Naxos*, employing an innovative musical language that emphasizes the natural flow of conversational drama. Another highlight is its unique structure, in which 11 flowing “intermezzi”—which connect the scenes and give the opera its title—add dramatic color to the narrative. The cast brings together a group of accomplished artists renowned for their acting skills, including Philip Jeckel (as Storch), a tenor who rose through the ranks of the Deutsche Oper Berlin; Maria Bengtsson (as Christine), a soprano whose artistry has reached new heights of maturity; and Thomas Bröndel.
